BrusselsBrussels is the Capital of Belgium and also the capital of the European Union (EU). The city is more than 1000 years old and has Dutch and French as a regional language. It has grown since the 10th century and is today one of the most populated cities in Europe.

The Brussels Airport and Brussels South Charleroi airport city of Brussels connect Brussels to other cities. There is also the Eurostar trains that link Brussels to cities such as London, Paris and Frankfurt. Public transport within the city is relatively easy with many bus and tram networks.

Everard ‘t Serclaes

This is a golden statue of Lord Everard’t Serclaes, a noble man during the 14th century. The legend says that when you touch his wrist, it will bring you love.

De Rue des Bouchers is a very popular street known for the best restaurants located here. This small road is surrounded by food and cosy terraces, you almost feel the whole street is one big restaurant.

Manneken Pis

The statue of Manneken Pis also known as “le petit Julien”,  is a miniature bronze sculpture, a child peeing, representing the free spirited attitude of Brussels city. The famous statue is located at the junction of Rue de l’Étuve/Stoofstraat and Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat. There is nowadays a female known as Jeanneke Pis. This is located on the east side of the Impasse de la Fidélité / Getrouwheidsgang.

The weirdest pub is located at the “haringstraat 12″, which is a side street on the Grand place. The cafe is totally dark the minute you walk in the place. It is decorated with tombs, coffins, bones and skulls. One can drink out of skulls or place your drink on top of one of the coffins.

Grand place

In the middle of the Brussels, an ancient city named the Grand place or the Grote market is located. There are gigantic buildings and beautiful picturesque houses that made the Grand place to the most beautiful cities around the globe. Koninklijk paleis

Het Belgisch koninklijk paleis or the Belgian Royal Palace is located opposite the Parliament building on the other side of the Royal Park.  It is opened to the public on certain times of the year with free admission. The palace hosts four contemporary works of art. One of these is “Heaven of Delight” by artist Jan Fabre.

The Park of Brussels

This park is also known as “het Warandepark” found opposite the Royal Palace. It is the central park of the city has an area of 13 acres big with many fountain features.

Koninlijke serres van Laken

Koninlijke serres van Laken are the royal gardens in the park of the Royal Castle of Laken in Brussels.  These gardens are vast complex of monumental heated greenhouses with a great collection of exotic and ordinary species of flowers and plants. The gardens open to the public only in April-May during a two-week period when most flowers are in full bloom.

St. Michael and Gudula Cathedral

This Gothic style cathedral is located on the border of upper Brussels and lower Brussels on Treurenberg Hill and was renovated in the 13th century.

Museum of instruments de musique

Museum of instruments de Musique is different with a collection of unique and diverse collection of musical instruments from around the world.  You have the opportunity to listen to these instruments through headphones.

The Atomium

This is a large monument built with nine steel spheres connected by tubes, forming an iron crystal by architect A. Waterkeyn in 1958 for the Expo – Brussels world fair.  It is located on the Boulevard du Centenaire, beside the King Baudouin Stadium in Heysel Park.  Entry fee is rather expensive.

Mini-Euopa

Mini Europa is a small entertainment park located at the foot of Atomium with all significant structures in Europe built to a small-scale.

Red Fortor Lal Quila

This powerful 2.4 km fort was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan with red stone and thus the name Red Fort or Lal Quila. The fort has various locations such as the Diwan-i-Am (the public hall), Diwan-i-Khas (the courtroom,) Rang Mahal (place for Royal ladies), Hamam, Moti Masjid, Mumtaz Mahal and Naubat Khana ( the House of music). There are two entries – Delhi Gate and Lahori Gate.

India Gate/India Door

It is the famous 42 metres high India war memorial monument on the ceremonial avenue, Raj Path. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens to commemorate the martyrs of the British Indian Army who sacrificed their lives for the Indian Empire in the first world war and the Afghan war. After the independence of India, it has become the tomb of the unknown soldier of the Indian army, known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti.

Lotus Temple/Bahai Temple

This  Temple is the Baha’i House of worship. The temple is lotus-shaped and is often considered one of the seven wonders of the India. The complex also houses swimming pools and gardens.

Old Fort

This is an ancient and historic monument in Delhi. It has massive walls, three gateways, Sher Mahal and the mosque.

Jama Masjid

JAMA Masjid is the largest mosque in India with carvings and verses from the Koran inscribed on the walls. This mosque has five floors built by Shah Jahanin 1658. The first three storeys is made of red sandstone, the fourth of marble, and the fifth of sandstone.

Qutub Minar

This is a UNESCO World Heritage situated in Mehrauli.  It is the largest brick red sand stone minaret in the world as a symbol of the beginning of Islam in India and a minaret to call the faithful to prayer.  It was built by Qutb ud Din Aibak in 1193 and completed by Îltutmish and Firoz Shah Tughlak.

Tomb of Humayun

This monument is a UNESCO World Heritage site of  Mughal architecture. It was built in 1565 AD by order of Haji Begum in memory of her late husband Emperor Humayun. The Tomb was built with red sandstone and decorated with black and white marble borders. There are well watered gardens surrounding this tomb which has many water channels crisscross.

Purana Quila

The fort was built by Sher Shah and Humayun on the site of the Indraprastha, mentioned in the great Mahabharata. Its wall extend almost a mile and has three doors the river Yamuna flows nearby.

Jantar Mantar

This observatory displays the collection of Sawai Jia Singh II, one of the courtesans in the Mughal era. He was a noble man with a keen interest in astronomy.

There are also many monuments built to remember the dynamic leaders who played an important role in the development of India. These monuments are found along the Yamuna River. Such past leaders as Rajghatis, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi .

The Royal Palace

The old Alcázar of Habsburg was destroyed by fire in 1724 and Philippe V commissioned the Italian architect Filippo Juvarra to design a new courthouse.  Today 50 of its 2800 rooms are opened to visitors and the palace is still used for the head of State visits and other ceremonies.

Gran Via

It is one of the most popular areas for shopping in the city with a large number of hotels and movie theatres.  The architecture  is of the beginning of the 20th century and you can explore the large beautifully decorated “edificios” large buildings such as the Edificio Metrópolis.

Theatre Royal

This is located in the Plaza de Oriente, in the Palacio Real and was built in 1818, after the demolition of the theater Caños del Peral.   It was inaugurated in 1850 by Queen Isabel II  and many European opera singers of the 19th and early 20th century performed at this theatre.  Some of the well known performances were the operas of Verdi and Wagner, Stravinsky and the Russian ballet works.

Buen Retiro Park

Located near the city centre and next to the Museum of Prado.  It is also known as “Pleasant retirement Park” and was originally built as a retreat of the Royal family dating from the early 16th century.  It features the la Rosaleda rose garden, the remains of the Palace El Buen Retiro and numerous famous statues of  Spain.  In  addition there is the forest of the infiltrators, which was built in honour of the victims of  the 2004 Madrid attacks.

Madrid Plaza Mayor

This square is completely surrounded by architectural buildings of the 17th century such as the Casa de Panaderia and Casa of the Carniceria. There are nine entries leading to the Plaza and in the centre of the square stands the statue of  King Philippe III.

The Plaza de España

This plaza dates back to the 18th century and today, it is a popular place for sunbathing and street vendors. The square is located at the end of the Gran Via and has a huge fountain and the famous statue in honour of the well known Spanish writer Cervantes.

Castle Vajdahunyad

This castle is a replica of Vajdahunyad Castle in Transylvania, Romania. It’s located in the City Park behind Hero’s Square and across the park from the Szechenyi thermal bath. Originally it was put together from wood and cardboard for the millenary celebrations in 1896 but it became so popular that it was rebuilt from stone and brick.

Budapest Caves

Budapest is one of the very few cities in the world where more than 200 caves can be found underneath. . During World War 2 the caves served as a bomb shelter.  Three of the most impressive caves located in Buda Hill are open to the public.  Visitors can explore the mysterious exhibitions, dark passages and beautiful formations.

Fisherman’s Bastion

The medieval Fisherman’s Bastion is located in the castle district on the Buda side on Castle Hill. You can reach the top tower and explore it at night to get stunning views across the Danube river.

Budapest Children’s Railway

Situated in the leafy cool hills above Budapest, children are literally in charge of the Railway. This Railway has eight stops  and was built in 1951 by Pioneers ( a socialist version of the scouts). Today this Railway is a mini tourist industry run by children under 14′s of Budapest. They are capable of driving trains, keeping to timetables, speaking  few languages and dealing with the general public.

Buda Castle

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery (Fat Man Sze)

Located high above Sha Tin you have to climb the 400 stairs up to the monastery.  There are Buddhas of all descriptions and there are Buddhas everywhere you look. Happy Buddhas, solemn Buddhas, playful Buddhas, fierce Buddhas, gentle Buddhas and reverent Buddhas line the pathways; decorate the monastery temple walls and every other conceivable place.

Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower

It is the only remnant of the original site of the formal Kowloon Station or also known as the Kowloon-Canton Railway. It is near the Victoria Harbour and it is built with red bricks and granite and declared as monument since 1990.

Wet Markets

The wet markets are the best place to buy fresh food and the best ones are found in Happy Valley, Wanchai, Mongkok, Central, Yau Ma Tei, and North Point.

Times Square

The most famous and popular major shopping centre in Causeway Bay on the Hong Kong Island opened since 1994. This site was previously used as a tram depot for the Hong Kong Tramways. The Causeway Bay MTR station is right below it, and there is a passage way that links directly to the shopping mall.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum

Located in HK’s Central Road displaying the memoirs of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. It displays all his accomplishment. He  was the person behind the transformation of China from a monarchy into a republic.

Police Museum

It showcases the history of Hong Kong’s police force. Uniforms and weapons together with various police files and memorabilia are displayed here.

Places to Visit in Colorado

Estes Park

It is 64 km northwest of Denver and sits at the door of Rocky Mountain National Park. There are all kinds of shops and unique restaurants. The Denver Art Museum
